Thank you for visiting Concord College Summer Course website.  We are often asked many specific questions by prospective students and their parents.  Below are the answers to the more common ones.  

1. What type of course do you offer? 
    English as a Foreign Language and Intensive Science courses.
 
2. What are the course dates and fees for Summer 2010?

3. What does the fee include? 
   
Tuition, accommodation, all meals, Heathrow airport transfers on first and
    last days of course,
(air fare and airport transfers in country of origin are
    not included), course photograph, all sports and recreation activities on campus
    (and some off campus), laundry and excursions.
 
4. How can the fees be paid? 
   
By bank transfer or cheque in pounds sterling.  Payment by Visa card can also be
    accepted, subject to a 3.0% administration charge.  A deposit of £500.00 is payable
    at the time of booking to secure the place.  Balance of fees are due six
    weeks
 prior to the commencement date of the course.  
 
5. Where is the school located?           
   
In Central England (the Heart of England) near to the border with Wales.  This is
    one of the most beautiful areas in the UK.  The local town is Shrewsbury which is
    about 45 minutes from Birmingham and about 3 hours from London.  You can

6. What is your age range? 
   
We run junior courses for students from 8 to 18 years.
 
7. How many levels do you have? 
   
All levels from beginners to advanced.
 
8. How many students in a class? 
   
12 maximum.  Some classes are smaller.
 
9. How are students placed in a class? 
   
A test is given at the start of the course and students are placed according to
    their age and English ability.  We try to have mixed nationality classes where
    possible and a reasonable mix of boys and girls.
 
10. Do you accept groups? 
      Yes, small groups are welcome although many of our bookings are on an
      individual basis.
 
11. What type of accommodation do you offer? 
     
Most of our students are in single study-bedrooms.  We do have a few double
      rooms for our younger students.  Girls and boys are strictly segregated in
      different houses with teachers living in with the students.
 
12. What kinds of pastoral care do you have? 
      Each residential teacher is responsible for a small group of students living near
      them for any general welfare problems, this teacher will see their students
      every morning and every evening at bedtime.  Each class has its own class
      teacher who will monitor academic progress and liaise with the Directors of
      Studies.  Behavioural problems are dealt with by the Course Director.
  
13. Do you arrange any other activities apart from studying? 
     
Yes.  We have a very well equipped campus including sports hall with squash
      courts, aerobics and weight training rooms, running track, swimming pool, two
      soccer pitches, rugby pitch, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts (outdoor),
      9 hole golf course, photography dark room, art room, computer room, Internet
      café, disco and cinema to show video films. We also have a Performing Arts
      Centre with large auditorium and music practice rooms.  We employ specialist
      Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Art teachers to organise our
      recreation programme. 
 
14. Are all your teachers native speakers? 
     
Yes – and all our EFL teachers have a minimum of RSA Certificate in Teaching
      EFL or equivalent.
 
15. What teaching methods do you use? 
     
This varies according to level but we aim to get students using their English as
      much as possible with lessons in the four skills of reading, writing, listening and
      speaking.  Grammar is also taught in textbook based lessons.  Use of English
      outside the classrooms is encouraged at all times and in the afternoons we have
      an option programme with a wide variety of subjects.
 
16. What examinations do you offer? 
     
None on short Summer Courses such as these.
 
17. Will a student get a Certificate at the end of the course? 
     
Each student has a report sent home which gives information on English
      progress and involvement in the recreational programme.
 
18. How can a student enrol? 
     
Complete our application form, (in brochure, printed from website) and return it to
      us, or apply directly on line.  We will confirm availability of places. A deposit of
      £500 will then be required to secure a place.  This is deducted from the course fee.
      The balance of fees is due six weeks before the course starts.
 
      Cancellation of a booking must be notified in writing.  The cancellation will
      take effect from the day the written confirmation is received.  The following
      scale of cancellation charges will be payable depending on when the notification
      of cancellation is received.

      14 to 20 days                    60% of total course cost
        7 to 13 days                    90% of total course cost
      less than 7 days               100% of the total course cost    
 
      The College reserves the right to withdraw a student from courses in cases of
      bad behaviour and to pass on all associated costs relating to that withdrawal.

19. Can we assist in getting visas for students?  
      We are a registerd sponsor with the U.K Border Agency.  Our letter of acceptance
      details start and finish dates, course fee, type of course and accommodation
      arrangements to support a visa application.  We can write further letters of support
      if required.
 
20. Does the College have a medical insurance scheme? 
      NO - There is no charge for students to be treated by the College nurse or
      our local doctor.  There is usually no charge for emergency treatment in
      National Health Service hospitals.  These are excellent in emergency cases but
      have long waiting lists for non-emergency treatment. There may be a charge for
      follow up or secondary treatment for students from some countries.  Students
      from E.U. Countries should carry a European Health Insurance Card (E111).  We
      strongly recommend medical (Holiday) insurance is arranged in the contry of
      residence to cover non-emergency treatment or repatriation e.g. an air
      ambulance.  The College cannot arrange this for such short courses.  We also
      strongly recommend that you take out full insurance in case you have to
      cancel your course for any reason.  This will in most cases include cover
      against loss of deposit. 
 
21. Does the College arrange insurance of personal belongings? 
     
NO - The College does not insure against the loss of students’ personal
      belongings.  If parents feel this is necessary, they should make their own
      arrangements with an insurance company in their own country.

22. Is the College accredited by any organisation? 
      YES - The College's English Summer Courses (But not its Science Summer Courses) are inspected
      and accredited by the British Council.  Concord College is a member of English UK.
